Talk to your school counselor about classes within the Education and Training Careers Cluster. They will be able to guide you through electives and extracurricular activities that can best help you become a teacher.

The Education and Training Careers Cluster provides opportunities for you to develop skills that relate to the art of teaching, including early childhood education, child development, and introductory teaching classes.

Obtain Your Highschool Diploma

Upstate South Carolina’s schools have many opportunities to start preparing early for a career in education.

Obtain a Four-Year Degree

A wide range of colleges and universities specialize in training teachers, school counselors, and school leaders in South Carolina. Scholarships and grants are available to help make your dream a reality.

Pass Praxis Tests

Two Praxis® tests are required as part of the licensure and certification process for South Carolina. There are many preparation resources available.

Apply for Certification

The South Carolina Department of Education issues licenses to teachers as the final step in teaching requirements.

  1. Complete an online application through the My SC Educator Portal prior to all other steps.
  2. Complete the Fingerprinting Process and Criminal Records Review.
  3. Submit all required materials for your Certification Pathway.
